The expressive power of Israel’s jazz musicians was in full force this weekend, as three wonderful groups took to the stage at the Jewish Community Center for San Francisco’s first Israeli Jazz Festival. From New York's Small Jazz Club and Boston's Berklee College of Music, Israeli jazz musicians have worked to redefine the cultural composition of modern jazz. After the cosmopolitan vibe of Third World Love opened the festival, Sunday afternoon heard the intricate compositions of saxophonist Eli Degibri with the intelligent support of Kevin Hays on piano. The barnstorming finale was provided by a double bill, with firstly rising guitarist Gilad Hekselman taking to the bandstand with his trio, before the joyous Tel Aviv siblings the 3 Cohens brought the house down with their contagious blend of ragtime, blues, tightly arranged horn harmonies and free-flowing improvisations, adeptly supported by bassist Joe Martin and Obed Calvaire, one of New York’s most sought after drummers.
